Delta Phi Lambda Foundation Awards $5,500 in COVID-19 Emergency Relief Funds
Atlanta, GA -- As the COVID-19 pandemic forced closures of university campuses and businesses across the United States, the Delta Phi Lambda Foundation awarded 11 scholarships totaling $5,500 in emergency aid to undergraduate and alumna members in financial need as a direct result of the pandemic.
After the application period opened for the first round, the Foundation received donations from alumni chapters at UNC Charlotte, University of Central Florida, University of Cincinnati, and University of West Florida. In combination with the Sorority’s contribution, the Foundation was able to open a second round of scholarships. The scholarships were made possible by generous donations to the Foundation and by repurposing funds related to the annual Delta Phi Lambda Sorority Convention, which has since been made a virtual event.
Following two rounds of applications, 11 recipients were awarded scholarships in the amount of $500 each based on their personal statements and financial need. Many indicated they would use the funds to help cover basic living costs including rent and groceries.
“During an unprecedented event like this, anything can happen. I never would have imagined being unemployed for the first time with no direction. Not knowing exactly what to do or where to go is nerve wracking. We are so grateful to have our Foundation and our Donors. With this fund I am able to divide it up and use some for my housing, utilities, and groceries.” - Scholarship Recipient
